Kupfer, 24, was working alone at the Croft House furniture store in Hancock Park on January 13 when she was stabbed to death; her body was found by a customer 20 minutes later. The suspect has been identified by police as Shawn Laval Smith.
The victim has been identified as Brianna Kupfer, according to various local media reports. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) say that she was alone in the store when the suspect attacked her. A customer later found Kupfer and called 911.
Initially, investigators had determined that the fire was not the result of a hate crime. But the subsequent vandalism has muddied that conclusion.
The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) Board of Trustees passed a resolution on October 26 to include the teaching of antisemitism in the ethnic studies curriculum.
The council — which will be comprised of state elected officials, academics, advocates and community organizations — will be tasked with educating students about the Holocaust and other acts of genocide and equipping young people with tools to combat antisemitism and other forms of hate and bigotry.
The bill, Assembly Bill 57, states that the California State Auditor concluded that law enforcement has not adequately identified and responded to the rise in hate crimes in the state since 2014.
